Get to know me

Hello, I’m Lou! I’m excited to share a bit about myself with you. In this blog post, I’ll be answering 10 fun questions that will give you a glimpse into my interests, passions, and what makes me tick. Let’s dive in!

1. What inspired you to become a creative practitioner?

I have been captivated by creativity, art, and storytelling from a young age. My educational journey through school and university allowed me to hone my skills in digital software, revealing that graphic design and content creation are excellent avenues for expressing my creative passions. I find immense joy in this work. Over the years, I’ve deepened my knowledge through reading, visiting galleries, and attending workshops, further strengthening my abilities in these fields.

I refer to myself as a creative practitioner because this title encompasses the range of my skills without confining me to a single role. I am not limited to being just a graphic designer; I am also a photographer, videographer, animator, marketer, and more.

2. How would you describe your design style and approach?

My design style is adaptable and varies depending on the specific project and the client’s needs. However, I generally gravitate toward crafting cute and playful cartoon characters, often employing vibrant colours. I strive to create bold and distinctive designs whenever possible, ensuring my work is engaging, diverse, inclusive, and centred around the audience.

3. What’s your go-to creative fuel—coffee, tea, snacks, or something else?

My beverage choices vary throughout the day. I start my mornings with coffee mixed with oat milk. As the day progresses, I usually opt for Pepsi Max, an energy-boosting herbal tea, or a second coffee if I need an extra pick-me-up. In the evenings, I like to unwind with decaf coffee or indulge in a comforting hot chocolate.

4. Do you have any pets, and how do they fit into your creative routine?

I live with two rumbustious miniature dachshunds named Fudge and Rolo. They’re the best snuggle buddies after a long day, and seeing their unique personalities shine through is always a joy. Watching them brings a smile to my face every time!

5. What books, films, or art pieces have deeply influenced you?

Two films that have profoundly influenced me are The Lion King (1994) and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). Both movies are visually stunning, featuring colourful and detailed animation that captivates my imagination. The Lion King holds a special place in my heart, as it was the first film I fully understood at the age of three. Its storyline is simple, but the memorable songs and characters resonate with audiences even today.

In contrast, I discovered Atlantis when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I distinctly remember rewinding my VHS tape repeatedly to relive the action-packed scenes and unexpected plot twists. The film offers a richer, darker narrative than other Disney movies of its time, reflecting an understanding that children can grasp more complex themes. As an adult, I recognise the film’s shortcomings, such as plot holes and the lack of diverse representation among its characters. Despite these flaws, it has left a lasting impression on me. I admired Milo, the main character, for being a unique protagonist, unlike the typical heroes found in animated films at the time.

Both films have made a lasting impact on me, serving as sources of nostalgia and inspiration. I appreciate how they attempted to explore new ideas; The Lion King defied expectations and became a massive box-office success, while Atlantis, though initially overlooked, has gained a dedicated cult following.

6. When you’re not working, what are your favourite ways to spend your time?

I enjoy various activities that bring me joy and relaxation in my free time. Reading and listening to music are two of my favourite pastimes, along with playing cosy video games. I also love watching TV and films, walking along local public footpaths, and participating in Buddhist activities. These interests allow me to unwind and enrich my life outside of work.

7. What’s the most rewarding project you’ve worked on so far?

The most rewarding project I have been involved in thus far is “Raising Young Voices.” I found great fulfilment in creating the storyboard illustrations and participating in the steering group. It’s thrilling to see where we can go and how we can effect real change to make Lincoln a better place for everyone.

8. If you could design something for any cause or organisation, what would it be and why?

If I had the chance to design for a cause, I would love to collaborate with Gendered Intelligence, a trans-led charity focused on enhancing the understanding of gender diversity and improving the lives of trans people. I envision creating resources and engaging in campaigns with them. I am also passionate about working with TransActual, which advocates for the safety, dignity, and healthcare access of trans individuals. Founded in 2017, TransActual focuses on legal protections and raising awareness of trans experiences. I would love to design posters and informational materials for them. Being trans and non-binary myself, I want to support and uplift others, particularly the youth within our community.

9. What are your favourite quotes you have heard regarding design, creativity, or life?

Here are three of my favourite quotes:

“It’s through mistakes that you actually can grow. You have to get bad in order to get good.” - Paula Scher
“Could there ever be a more wonderful story than your own?” Nichiren Daishonin
“A great work of art is one that truly moves and inspires you. You yourself must be moved. Don’t look at art with others’ eyes. Don’t listen to music with others' ears. You must react to art with your own feelings, your own heart and mind.” Daisaku Ikeda
